Up the Hudson to Troy

We took 2 days to get up the Hudson and up the first 6 locks on the Erie. We took pictures of West Point but no place to stop and get a tour. Good pic of Amy with West Point in background.

We stopped at Cold Spring for lunch (a very Gilmore-esque type of town).

We stopped for the night at Catskill (where Rip Van Winkle slept). We walked into the downtown area from the marina to go to the movies. Along the sidewalks where 2' plastic cats painted/collaged in various ways (see pic).

The movie theatre was a small town OLD theatre (but with 2 screens-they turned what used to be the balcony for 1 screen into the 2nd theatre) but we saw the newest movie, Ratatouille.

On the 6th we made it up to Troy/Waterford) and entered the Erie Canal. The first 6 locks are famous of lifting you the most in such a short span. By lock 3 we had our "locking through" procedure down fairly well.

At lock 4 we had a fun conversation about all the things that have gone wrong on family vacations with the 2 lock attendants. One of them got out his camera to get a video of Amy telling one of our vacation stories. Then......

We had a little engine trouble between Lock 4 and 5. Just as we were exiting Lock 4 the boat died. We drifted over to the side and tied up. Sandy (McGyver in disguise) ended up making a fuel gasket out of a plastic lunch meat container to hopefully fix the problem. One of the lock attendants walked up the wall to see how we were doing and what the problem was. It finally started back up (yeah, Sandy!).

Without us asking or knowing it, the lock attendant ended up driving home, picking up some gaskets and bringing them down to us at Lock 5. He was a super nice guy!

We made it through Lock 6 and called it a day at Albany Marine Service Marina.

Sandy,
Finally getting around to visiting your vacation blog! I've been to Cold Spring before -- a nice little place to have lunch and browse around for an afternoon. I particularly liked the picture of the painted cat!
Thanks for letting us all travel along with you and your family!
Donna S.
